Thanks once again for the comments.

My prior batch of cane had no ears and so I didn't know, until I got this batch, that "ears" existed on shaped cane. My teacher told me to go ahead and rough scrape with the ears intact, and we will address how to get rid of them at my lesson tomorrow. I didn't have any particular problem that I know of, with the tying on.

I live in a near-zero-humidity area; the way we soak cane for tying on is to get a bowl of water very hot in the microwave and then put the cane in. When the cane sinks, it is wet enough to shave down the narrow ends and tie on. I've found it takes about an hour for it to get this wet, and I just set the timer and go do something else.

My biggest problem so far is clipping at a 90 degree angle; it seems that no matter how carefully I line it up visually, I get some kind of weird slant on the tip. I playfully asked a friend if miniature guillotines existed, and then later found out that there are automatic tip clipplers that are called guillotine style! That was pretty funny. I've designed my own device that I'll call a tip clipping guard, and if I get around to building it I'll post plans. It's more of a "hold the staple in place and use a fixed backstop for the knife to ensure it's at a 90 degree angle" device rather than a tip-clipping device per se, and I would expect it to be very inexpensive to build.
