<how to acualy change your sound....

when i listen i can hear things that i don't like, now what, how do i inflict a diff. sound to suit my preferance>

When you hear something you don't like, or want to change, you need to become very analytical about what you are hearing, and then experiment with different ways of playing until you figure out what helps.

Example: you chronically play sharp (every reed, every day)
Analysis: am I "biting" the reed closed? am I taking too much reed into my
mouth (playing too close to the thread)?
Fix: make sure the embouchure tension is at the corners, not the center,
of your lips. Make sure you are playing on the tip of the reed.

Example: you sound quacky and shrill
Analysis: are my lips surrounding the tip of the reed? am I using good
abdominal suppport for my air? am I aiming the airstream toward
my nose? what vowel sound am I using to shape my pharynx?
Fix: put more of your lips on the reed. tighten up your abs. aim the air
stream as if you were trying to put it out your nose; think the
vowel "ah".

Example: your attacks aren't clean -- they scoop or crack.
Analysis: am I getting the air into the reed before I release my tongue?
am I keeping a consistent air stream, even in staccato?
Fix: become very intentional about coordinating your air with your
tongue release -- air must be there first. Keep the air stream
flowing consistently, starting and stopping notes with your
tongue, not your air.

You need to become constructively self-critical about every facet of your playing if you are going to be your own teacher (and we all must teach ourselves, to one extent or another, even if we have a teacher).

Good luck

Susan
