Hi everyone,
I have a Yamaha 841T in Kingwood on trial for a week and I'd like to find out if any of you have experience with this horn. I have heard that the yamahas have a tendency to crack, but I'm willing to take my chances in that regard. I'm more interested to know what your experiences are with playability and what I should expect with respect to tone, intonation, etc. after it's broken-in. Right out of the box, my impressions are:
1. Intonation is excellent, there are a couple of slightly-off notes but the problems are minor and I think they may be easy to correct.
2. Tone is very even. Dark overall but with a little bit of hiss that I think is mostly in my head (it's much less apparent on recordings). It's a little dead though but not any more than the other new yamahas that I tried (about 10 of them) -- it doesn't have the depth of my Loree (LB series, AK bore). I'm hoping this will get better as it gets broken in.
3. Low-note response is wonderful. Much better than most Lorees, not as good as most Marigaux.
4. Projection is very good I think. Although I've only played it at home so far, it seems like it will produce a big sound.
5. High note response is good, but the fingering that I normally use for high-A (4 ledger lines above staff) doesn't work on this oboe. Otherwise, no complaints.
Thanks,
-Woody
