Thanks all for your replies so far.... Great food for thought.

I think what keeps me going on this instrument is how wonderful I *can* sound at times and I like to challenge myself to sound as good or better the next time. It can be a bummer, but.... When all of the demanding criteria are met, oh what a gorgeous sound! That's enough to keep anyone going.

With experience, I presume it's easier to meet the demanding criteria and be more consistent. Practice makes perfect. It's the patience part that tries us all. Those of us who choose this instrument are unique and special, and of course patient. That's a given!
