Hi oboists:
When listening to different oboists play, I sometimes cringe at how duck-like their sound is, especially when they play rapidly, tonguing through each rapid note. The duck sound seems to come when starting off a note too loudly, or at least that is how I perceive it. Or it could be that the notes are really lifeless in that they lack volume changes. So in essence, to avoid sounding like a duck, it would seem logical to start a note rather softly, crescendo, and then decrescendo. Is this the logical approach to sounding pretty? Do your better oboists do this getting louder/getting softer thing even on quick, choppy pieces? It's difficult to tell....
With all the discussion lately about long tones, is this one of the major benefits of practicing long tones on the oboe's range -- to make the sound less obtrusive or quacky by learning how to start soft? If so, this is a real good thing to emphasize so we all practice long tones more.
Would love to hear your opinions. Thanks.
