I'm sure a lot of people do try to take up oboe, but just as many probably try to quit! I took up oboe to escape from the flute, but I found myself unsuccessfully trying to escape the oboe. It's hard to appreciate the oboe when you switch to it from another instrument since you get dropped down to a level below everyone else, suffering to play passages that would be a piece of cake on your original instrument. It takes a long painful while to get up to speed... I can't even remember learning this instrument I was so traumatized. I just remember Rico reeds and that I played with a loose upper lip since I gave up on double lipping and a visiting oboe instructor was shocked that I could play that way (Don't compromise! It takes forever to correct bad embouchure!!!).
I think band directors push as many unsuspecting kids that they can to the oboe and hope to find a masochist, er, natural oboist or use scare tactics to make them play long enough to become comfortable.
