Hi Andrew,

I'm down in Sussex (the factory is in Worthing), and whenever I venture up to London to the main shop I end up skint as I can't ever leave without spending a small fortune up there! Having all three departments together in London is a recipie for a cash flow crisis!

I find playing oboe d'amore very rewarding - I don't own one myself, but having finished several d'amores has given me the opportunity to play test them for a much longer time than I'd spend play testing an oboe or cor.

They're a comfortable instrument to play from a physical point of view - they're not picky with reeds like an oboe or as bulky size-wise as a cor (which is THE sole reason why I took up oboe - so I could play cor), but definitely the happy medium.

The tone quality of an oboe d'amore goes without saying, and I doubt if Somerset Rhapsody, Rückert Lieder or Sinfonia Domestica would sound the same if the d'amore part was substituted for another instrument (oboe or cor) as the d'amore has a distinctive mezzo-soprano sound that nothing else can come near - oboe is too bright and cor is too thick (and weak up top), not that neither of them are bad, they just have different characteristics and their own qualities which good writing and good understanding makes the most of.

Former oboe finisher
Howarth of London
1998 - 2010

The opinions I express are my own.
