Andrew -- If you intend to remain an amateur player, I suggest that you purchase a d'amore or bass oboe only for your own enjoyment, or for unusual chamber music performances which you yourself design around using them. I have played professionally for several decades, and have been the primary d'amore player in a local Bach Festival, and am often hired to perform in church orchestras for Bach works, etc. It would depend on the music scene in your locale whether some of those types of engagements would go to an amateur; from my experience here, that is unlikely. (The d'amore is also called for in Ravel's Bolero and in Strauss' Domestic Symphony.) It is not likely that an amateur community orchestra would be more likely to choose you as one of their regular oboe players by virtue of the fact that you own the additional instruments; more likely is that they would just call you if they are performing a work requiring that instrument. In the 18 years in which I have been principal in a professional orchestra, only once did we call for a bass oboe, and at that time we rented an instrument and had one of our regular section players perform on it.
Sorry about the house fire; that must be devastating.
