Re: How do I find out about a Larilee? Also ideas for new student?

Hmmmm... I'm not sure dropping out of band is such a good idea. On the one hand, I can understand her not wanting to stand out as being not as good as she was, or as good as her peers on other instruments. However, it takes a lot more discipline to practice and slog away at something if there's no "payoff"- such as a concert, or little solo passage in the band music or whatever.

I am currently teaching a 7-th grader who is switching from flute to oboe. She's been playing about 6 months and has improved RAPIDLY--- and is happy to play in her band. I went to one of her concerts and she fit in just fine, and sounded good!

Regarding the oboe you bought - my strong advice would be to take the oboe back and find a teacher FIRST. Then, let the teacher help you find an oboe in your price range , and TAKE HIM/HER WITH YOU to play-test them. This is really really important. If your daughter isn't going to be playing in the band and doesn't need one right away, there's no rush. If she does decide to play in the band, rent one while you're looking. In fact, renting is a ggod idea in my mind anyway, until you are sure she really wants to stick with oboe. It isn't an easy instrument to play, and they ain't cheap! Also please consider buying a used one. I would much rather play a used Loree than a brand-new Selmer! If you want some ideas of brands that are good, I can talk to you off-forum if you like.

My student's parents bought her an oboe and then found a teacher. I wish they had done it the other way around!
