hello

I expirenced a similar problem.

It was the mandrels shaft that got out of alignment with its handle.

check yours by puting a staple on it and taking a pair of needlenose pliers
hold them perpindicular to the staple when viewed head on. the tips of the pliers should point at 12 oclock

to do this hold the end of the staple while it is mounted on the mandrel so it is pararell to the floor , the staple should be pointed at you so you are looking down it toward the handle.
place the open jaws of the pliers on the side of the staple pararell to its eliptical. as if you were going to squeeze the staple to make it round on the end.
the points of the pliers should be at 12 oclock.
if this is confusing, put a piece of folded shaped cane on the staple as if you were going to tie it and put the tips of the pliers on the side of the reed.

mine pointed to 11 oclock and my reeds were slipping the wrong way.
