I would say make sure that there *really* is an overlap. Just for now, try putting a little greater of an overlap than what you're used to, and see where that leaves you. It may create too much overlap the "right" way, but hey, it could also put it where you want it.
I know this may seem obvious, but also make sure that when you tie on, the tension is constant throughout the circular motion (think bike tire with spokes - equal tension all the way around). If it isn't even (i.e. sometimes pull hard, sometimes slack) it may cause the thread to relax/change after having tied the reed down, and might make the blades shift or twist.
