Dear Shawn,

I am interested in your dilemma and the idea of having "crossed blades" of a reed on purpose. I am aware that many long scrape players mention this as a technique, but in short scrape styled reeds much emphasis is spent on making sure that there is absolutely NO crossing of the blades. Strange how things are different.

The theory behind having no crossed blades is to ensure an even vibration of the reeds when they are parallel to each other, the crossing seams to style the response and attack of a short scrape reed.

But back to your question….to prevent any crossing there are various techniques which may translate over to your desire to actually have a consistent crossing of the blades;

- Place a small amount of Tubing (or a piece of drinking straw) on the folded cane when you are binding, this aides in keeping the blades straight.

- Heat scoring ( this is mentioned in another blog area) where you heat a mandrel and score the end of the cane to make it fit the staple better and with balanced blades.

- Do the first two binds of the cane close to the end of the staple ( tube), and gently manipulate the cane for a minute so that the blades are straight (or in your case crossed), then finish the top binding and as you bind back towards the cork of the staple (tube) make sure the blades are still in line ( or crossed as you desire).

My thoughts about you changing your shape recently may have made some difference to your binding procedure, but it fundamentally should not have changed your ability to create this crossed blade effect ?? it is a strange dilemma on your hands.

I will be interested in other people thoughts…
