Hi,

I strongly agree that using oboe in marchng band is a very bad idea.... BUT, there are some conditions that allow it:

1 - make a support on the bell ; I use a lyre for clarinet with half of the circle replaced by a home made grooved strip of leather .
2 - you can put on this lyra only few sheet of music: no heavy plastic cover, just a tiny cardboard sheet to keep them flat and readable. You cannot bring with you all the 35 marches of your repertoire.

3 - Easy music: if the director want you to play al the score must be without too low or too high notes; you have already a lot of problems playing oboe, if you have to march, breath an keep the pace.. and play costantly Eb over the score you're finished.

4 - Most important of all: you must have a support that downloads oboe weight on a rod resting on a neck or belt sustained support... similar in reduced scale to the type of support people uses for bringing around flags ;I saw something in the web in the past, but mine is still home made.

Still after the above arrangement playing oboe marching is a really bad choice, but if you cannot play other instruments this arrangement allow you to contribute in slow marching occasion: my experience with religious holydys marchs showed it at least affordable.

Last but not least : IMHO it is veeeery difficult to find a band director knowing the differnce between oboe and clarinet (... they are both black and with silver key , isn't ?
