Yeah, those are shawms in the picture.

Your ear may have selected the SoCal RenFaire Youtube video as "closest match" for whatever you heard the previous weekend, but the shawms I've heard sound quite definitely like oboes, with that clear ("bright"), piercing, nasal tone, not like crumhorns, which always seem to have that buzzy "kazoo" thing going.
