With the Navy band, the oboists either do bass drum or cymbals on marches.

I tried both - I prefer bass drum, but remembering the signals is a pain as you're not reading off any music, and wearing a full size tiger skin over your uniform and gauntlets isn't a good idea in the summer. So I do sax instead, I prefer playing tenor on marches as alto usually reads off the (very boring) tenor horn parts if there aren't any alto sax parts. In 'Sempre Fidelis' the tenor horn only seems to play two notes - the open C# and D over the break - not the best interval on most alto saxes!
