I know that this discussion is pretty old but it IS cold season. I have a studio of 11 students and I make reeds for all but 2. My rules are this: if you are sick tell me BEFORE I play on your reeds and I will disinfect them (with straight hydrogen peroxide, then a dip in water). If I am sick (but well enough to teach, i.e. no fever), I disinfect anything before I hand it over to them too.

Someone had written that the thought of passing reeds back and forth was unsanitary but we pretty much have the same germs as everyone else. I have never caught a cold from a student and my teacher (John Mack) never got one or passed one on to my knowledge (or his) and he would never have thought twice about playing on our reeds unless we were really sick. All oboists I grew up with and went to school with never even thought about it unless we were sick. Just pass your oboe over, no dipping in water or anything. Oboists are like family so I guess it seems natural. Never had a student complain either. Just a thought. Thanks
