That's a REALLY good idea. One of my favorite (and most useful) exercises I got from my teacher was to hold just the reed right in the center of your rolled-in lips, and try to tongue it without a) having the reed bounce around and b) without pulling your lips back into a "smile". Harder than it sounds.

So, what was your motivation to try the oboe in the first place? Do you play/have you ever played any other instrument? Can you read music? (I was guessing maybe you had played something before -- most people don't think, "Gee, maybe tomorrow I'll take up a band instrument," right out of the blue.)

Just take your interest and curiousity at your own speed. You ran into a board full of true believers here (probably to some extent busily justifying our own behavior), but that doesn't mean YOU have to play the oboe, now or ever.

And I read something the other day that said, come H-ll or high water, it takes just about everyone 3 - 5 years to learn any instrument, no matter their initial level of accomplishment or how hard they try. So you can relax and enjoy it, if you really want to give it a try. Ignore us!
