<<I'm wondering how many people on this board belong to bands or orchestras. My goal is to join a community orchestra when I'm good enough. Have you ever heard of the New Horizon Bands?>>
Good morning, Judy --
Well, I, for one, have been a member of a couple of different bands and groups, first as a clarinetist, and now as an oboist. Big deal this Fall is that I have formed a woodwind quintet, and we are gong at it with great fervor. The name of the group is going to be "Second Wind," because we are all adult musical retreads of one sort or another. Being the only one in the group who doesn't have a degree in music, I sometimes feel like the weak sister -- but I make up for it with my superior organizational skills!
And yes, I've heard of the "New Horizons" program. I was looking at it in the process of trying to find someplace that my husband and I could try together (we're at pretty much opposite ends of the accomplishment spectrum, musically).
I was trying to think at what stage of my development I first "came out" as an oboist. I think it was after about 18 months of huffing and puffing away at home. I know I got the original oboe in October, but still played clarinet that next summer in band. I switched to oboe the following Spring and Summer, to remarkably good reviews.
Interestingly, that's when the going got a little rougher -- after the first blush of success, when everyone was impressed by how well I played after such a short exposure to the instrument. I guess my own expectations (high) kicked in, and for the next two years or so, I have found myself increasingly dissatisfied with just about everything I am doing on the instrument.
I HOPE this means simply that my consciousness of what it takes to be a really good oboist has been raised. Still love it, but I'm working my tush off now, rather than just having a lark. Sometimes ignorance really is bliss.
Go for it!
Susan
