Judy -- what cj says is exactly what I did when I took up the oboe at the age of (mumble mumble) -- probably close to where you are now.
I bought a Linton off Ebay. It wasn't beautiful, but it played. According to my present teacher, the Lintons aren't bad for what they are -- beginner/school instruments.
Six months later, I bought the Yamaha 411. A year later, I sold it and bought my Covey Classic. Both of these were lightly used, of known provenance, and acquired at thousands less than new.
The only "mistake" in the bunch was probably the Yamaha 411 -- not that it was a bad instrument, and I did sell it for more than I paid for it, but that if I had it to do over again, I would consider jumping from the beginner to the professional instrument, skipping the intermediate. Your learning curve, as an adult, is probably going to be a lot faster than that of a kid, and anyway, you and I just don't have all that much time to burn anymore, right?
I've also learned alot about oboes and oboe makers along the way.
