Hi Judy,
I'm just beginning my second year on the oboe. I had never played before either. I think that you're going to like playing the oboe. I'm having a ball.
Before I bought my Buffet 4051 oboe (very nice, student horn with a good tone), I ordered three of the Barringtons to try them and look them over. I ended up sending all of them back. They had real mechanical problems that needed to be fixed before they would even work properly. As for the tone, well we didn't get that far with them. So, I wouldn't encourage you to go that route.
I think that students have enough challenges to overcome (finding good reeds to play on, learning fingering, building an embouchure, etc.) without having to struggle with a bad instrument. So, if it is at all possible, I think that you should call the nearest music stores to your location and plan a trip (even if it's overnight) so that you can play on the oboes that are available. If you can talk your future teacher into going with you that would be great.
If traveling to music stores isn't an option at all, then I would look on ebay. There are several reputable music stores that sell via ebay. I would try to find the best possible instument that you can afford. It will sound better, make your life easier, and be a better investment if you should decide to sell it one day.
