... but then, we use rulers marked in millimeters when we're beginners on reed-making. We need some kind of fixed standard to define the different sections of the reed AND train our hand-eye co-ordination knife skills to the half millimeter
... ditto concept "absolute pitch" in equal temperament -- a mechanical device (tuner, electric kb) is like the ruler for ear-training to notes when they're vibrating at standard cps
This isn't about being, or staying, carved in stone or arguing with other musicians that my note is better tuned than yours, it's a matter of defining and establishing and remembering 12 distinct semi-tones in mind's ear
Before ear-training, average people's awareness of musical notes is somewhat fuzzy
