I will try holding the cane from the sides and seeing if that helps. I normally do 2 initial wraps, but 3-4 may work better at holding the cane. Are you removing your fingers and checking for alignment before or after the crossover?
Since I have tried a number of cane suppliers (and shapes), I don't think that is the main issue. Anyway, I have a number of blanks now with cane shaped by my teacher. The goal will be now to test out to see if I like the shape (provided I can make any reeds that don't leak!) and the next step will be to buy a shaper tip. So at least for oboe, I will be starting from gouged only cane. Gouging will be a while off as I've spent a gazillion dollars on oboe-related stuff this past year (unemployed student here) so no gouger for me, and at this point, gouging would be just throwing another variable into the mix.
