The frequency of the string ping will vary with string length and tension.
So, if tension is equal during wrapping the pitch will increase as the remaining string shortens... I refer to the tied off anchor string which gives part of itself with each successive lap of spool thread.
I range from perhaps 7 free inches and then down as winding occurs. I have checked the pitch on FF and it is around a high g, but there is another test.
Once the thread is wound and the reed tied off you should not be able to move any threads by sideways pressure from your finger nails.
I tie very tight, too and stop winding 1/2 to 1 reed threads short of the staple's end and do the tie to close technique, plus a slight right-hander's overlap and slip once the tip is open.
I do an initial tip scrape somewhat beyond where the real tip will be to relieve pressure, clip the tip and slip it within 30 seconds of tying the reed.
I think that is important.
Since I tie kind of long now, I do get some leaks once the reed cane drys and shrinks a bit, but a little plumbers tape for a couple days (usually comes off later) solves for that and the reeds I make now are by far the best good reed yield of my life (40+ years on oboe reeds and counting.)
Good luck with it. I also use a nail file to smooth the edges the first 10 seconds after tying once the ears are removed. Gentle and slight. Improves the seal along the sides.
