The scored staples are best. I measure one and check it fits the mandrel exactly before I start. If it doesn't, I throw it away.

I make sure the blades are slipped a tiny bit in the right direction, top blade towards your wrapping hand (assuming you wrap the same way you pedal a bicycle). I slip 2-3 mm of drinking-straw onto the folded cane and push it up tight. Now the cane will hold the staple firmly, any way I leave it.

I insert my staple into this tight little wedge of cane and first get the length right. I have a ruler attached to the bottom of my desk that extends to any length I want, and for any given shape I have already figured out the ideal length to get me perfectly closed one wrap from the end of the staple. I use the back of my cutting block to push the staple in to the right length.

Now, I get the staple and cane perfectly straight and flat ; I hold the flat sides of the cane between finger and thumb and gently rotate and straighten the staple, just feeling the cane. I can tell when it is centered and aligned with my eyes closed.

Check the length again.

wrap a couple of wraps of thread, not too tightly, around the middle of the threaded part to hold. Twist and hold in the same hand as the thread, and this time check visually for alignment. Only now do I insert my mandrel, and then begin tightening and rolling the reed towards the anchor to bring the three wraps close to the top, watching both sides for even closure. I let the tension of the thread close the cane gently and firmly just as I get to (almost) the top of the staple.

This sounds complicated but it really isn't!

J.
