 Re: Tautness of thread

@Rachel,

I find that if I pull on the the mandrel as well, I run the risk of snapping the thread. Instead, after I make the cross-over I actually push the mandrel away from me, increasing the wrapping tension without the risk of snapping.

After the crossover, tension in the anchor thread is not really necessary since it is held tightly against the staple by the top three wraps. It is only needed for tying off at the bottom. Kerry Willingham actually snips the thread after the crossover because he ties by looping knots into the wrapping thread, and then varnishing all of the thread top to bottom.

I took a lot of ideas from Kerry Willinghams videos.

Look for "Wrapping Machine Demo". Even if you don't have the machine, you can see how he measures length consistently, how he centers the cane on the staple by feel.

I have also adopted another idea from Kerry Willinghams little video on machine-wrapping reeds. I use a dome-headed slotted wood-screw with a smooth shank as an anchor. Three or four turns around the screw and my thread is held tightly. If it has been waxed it just stays there and won't unravel until you snip and take off the 8-10 cm of wasted thread.

J.
