Drew, whether or not a "pro" plays Fox, your definition is so narrow as to be useless when taken literally. Since there are few salaried performers left, the assumption would be per-performance (no matter what venue) or hourly would be left out, as would just about any full-time professor of oboe - since they don't PLAY for a living, they TEACH for a living (notwithstanding solo appearances in top-rated venues).

Or for that matter, someone who is on-call for Broadway, or any number of other type situations when a PROFESSIONAL is called for but the pay is insufficient to survive on. A condition more and more likely for the second-tier American orchestras ...

My friend plays the Dallas Opera; there's no way he can survive on the pay from the opera (even though he's a core member). He supplements his income via teaching and conducting scuba dives around the world. I guess he's no professional, right, though he's in demand.
