 Hi,

My Mariguax oboe 901 which - has the most exquisite tone ... is a few cents flat and had a difference in the tuning in the two octaves. If the lower octave is in tune - then the upper would be sharp and vice versa.

I approached the problem systematically over a year with multiple tunings .. , I went to a 45 mm tube with a larger opening, I adjusted my scrape (tip/blend - more demarcation in the corners), my embouchure (more foward - more on the tip of the reed), the position I hold the oboe (no pulling close as I go up the scale), the use of air (more support) and changed my gouge.

Voila ................ perfect intonation in both registers .... however, it was a journey.

There are many factors that affect good intonation across registers ... all have to be addressed and ruled out! You need to be a good detective and be patient.

The scrape and gouge are crucial to good pitch stability once the mechanical factors are corrected.

If you really love the oboe and have a good repair person handy ... go for it.

For those interested RDGwoodwinds - Kritin Bertrand gave me superb service.

 Mark
