Re: Is your oboe sharper in the low register or the upper register?

Look, I know I'm not making any friends on this thread, and everyone loves a stroked ego, but at the end of the day, there is a difference in playing twice a month, or in two shows a year, than someone that plays music 6 days a week.

Full time = professional
Only some of the time = Semi-professional

I don't think that's too far off from what someone who is "normal", like an accountant does.

Are you a professional accountant if you do accounting for 3 people's taxes a year, or are you just an accountant on the side? A semi-professional. You still do a fine job, you may even do it better than professionals (but probably not), but you do not have a career as an accountant. I'm sorry if this hurts the accountant's feelings.

And really, I would not be this mean, except for the fact that this information could be taken as truth by someone that is trying to learn, and I've studied enough oboe makes to know that on the biggest stages in the world, Fox is not being played. Maybe my ego and aspirations are too big. I'm fine with that. I'll call myself semi-professional until I can say, "I make a full time salary from performing music." (and I'll probably teach on the side, not for money, but because others deserve to learn about the gift of music)
