Well, basically I'm talking pitch tendencies on oboes. I find it interesting how makes of equal caliber, and even instruments by the same maker, can have drastically different pitch tendencies. I almost had a heart attack this morning when the instrument I fell in love with seemed to be all over the tuner. I tested octaves to get a picture of what was happening, then did it with some of the other horns I got on trial. I just realized that most of the instruments I got on trial were tuned opposite the one I love, but not in a good way. The ones I didn't like seemed to be sharp in the low register, then flat in the upper register, and then sharp again in the altissimo. The one that I love has a nice easy curve flat to sharp from bottom to top, so blending is not a problem, especially from high C to high D, which I've always found especially problematic. The altissimo is decidedly more stable as well, and really does not sound tinny or harsh, but keeps the depth of the tone that the middle register has. It has to past the test next to a Loree Royal and Howarth s5 and xl, then it's all mine.
