I love the American sound - I really do - but I'm not obsessive about it. The most influential oboists of the past century have each developed an individual, distinctive style that is recognizable a mile away. What brought them to prominence was their music, not merely the sound they made.

The most important feature of any reed is that it be playable - articulation, dynamic range, intonation over the full range of the instrument, stability. Everything else comes much lower down on the scale of importance.

When you have the full range of expression at your service you will ALWAYS give a more musical performance, whether your sound is "thin cocoa" or "creamy chocolate". Music is what stands out against the crowd. There are thousands of wonderful pianists out there but people still buy Horowitz recordings, and not because of the piano he played!

Heinz Holliger makes an enormous range of music with his "thin cocoa" sound. I have heard him attack a staccato so hard it was almost percussion, play legato pianissimo passages with delicacy and perform feats of agility in presto passages. Get hold of his recording of the Cimaroza concerto to see what I mean. You can hear 30 seconds of each track [tracks 1-4] here: http://www.zik.ca/great-oboe-concertos-ACH001153214-en-pr.

Here's to music of all flavours, including cocoa and chocolate!

J.
