The 'dark' sound is a thick, full, round sound without the bright, nasal or 'quacky' quality to it and blends in with clarinets and bassoons.

European players vary widely with their playing and tone - not sure how you interperit this in the US, but would you say European players have an old-fashioned or a modern sound compared to American players?

From what American orchestral players I've listened to (though can't name them), to me they seem to have an old-fashioned sound that's still pretty much what is heard in film soundtracks from the '30s-'60s. But that's just my opinion.
