We owe you for your scientific approach to characterize tone color. This is good stuff. Thank you.

Have you tried the same with different reeds? - say one with reedy sound and one with complete void of reedy character. That may better reveal what "dark" sound might mean. Which would have more (both number and intensity) fundamentals or higher modes - not only the octaves but 5th and 7th?

Also comparing it "cold" oboe right out of case with "warm" one after playing for couple of hours would be an interesting thing to do. Oboes do sound different in the beginning of practice and toward the end of practice, the sound gets better. Now this comparison would reveal what better means.
