Steljes, Cynthia (1960 - 2006), she's the one from Quartetto Gelato (playing the orchestra part in that clip). The ensemble is Canadian (http://www.quartettogelato.ca/), but I don't know if Steljes was.

I absolutely adore her sound. Although I must agree with Mark that European style seems more inspired.

I have a bunch of symphony CDs and tapes from the 1980s from obscure east-European orchestras -- used to get them really cheap at the time Karajan and Dutoit (Berlin and Montréal) were hot -- and it seemed that these cheap recordings, though definitely less masterful, had more feeling, more "oumph". An opera singer made the same comment on you-tube videos of the overture of Die Fledermaus between Vienna (Carlos Kleiburn) and Berlin (Karajan).

Hence, though Steljes', sound is what I'm aiming for, Mayer is still the style I prefer.

There is another quality that Mayer has, but rarely the warm, dark mellow American sounds: I don't know any word for it so I call it "goosey". Imagine the round hollowness of an English horn (minus any trace of buzz) but with the quality of the Oboe. Most players of Baroque oboes exhibit this quality.
