I think that visual metaphor can be extended: I think of my Marigaux as a circle (or an o) and my Lorée as more of an ellipse--still round, and smooth, but a little stretched in one dimension. Different oboes might have ellipses stretched in slightly different directions. The oboes I tried that I didn't like were the ones that maybe were roundish, but with some sharp angles here and there. One could imagine "square" and "rectangular" sounds, perhaps.
