 What is the "dark" oboe sound?

What is dark sound that everyone seems to want today and seem to understand what it means? Is it just opposite to reedy ducky sound, which really does not narrow the meaning that much?

I do recognize that most, if not all, American oboe players sound "dark", but they all seem to sound very much alike to me.

On the other hand, European players are relatively easier to distinguish from one to another. Is that because they do not have dark sound or because of some other reason?
