I like the 'dusting' verbage: once the thing plays at all, take only a wee bit off at a time, play again, adjust, then (this is also a really good idea) put it away to 'mellow' awhile (several days) before you scrape again.
As to the German reed drawings, I think they are cool; and once again it just goes to show you that there are many ways to carve and slice, dust and scrape. (My teacher was a Bavarian, and a student of Tabuteau, a true eclectic; he taught that the reed should PLAY! and was willing to try out a variety of things with that in mind.)
Keep at it Claire, don't give up. You'll find your 'perfect scrape shape' eventually. Remember, you're making reeds for YOU.
