Re vboboe's comment about not being part of the need-to-know circle yet, I'm not sure that there is really a circle like that! In the bands I play in things seem to just happen by magic! Honestly, I know that there are section leaders, but I don't know how they are appointed or who appoints them or what their qualifications are (or even who they are until they sit in the same chair for a few weeks)! These are volunteer groups and somehow things just seem to work out. We all let the director know either in person or by e-mail if we can't make a rehearsal or concert (at least the players I know do). In one group I play with, the clarinets just seem to keep moving around. When the first chair dropped out to play in a musical theater event, the second chair second moved up to second chair first. Why not the first chair second? Why not move to last chair first? I feel like I'm "Through the Looking Glass" sometimes! In that group a player who knows they'll miss a concert will still play the rehearsals; but if they are normally a soloist or section leader they'll move out of position and play second parts until the next concert cycle.
