Our volunteer community band also occasionally has sketchy attendence at rehearsals - there is a regular bunch who come to every rehearsal - but no one would think to skip out on concert day short of being in the hospital. I agree what is the point of coming to the rehearsals if you know you won't be at the concert?! Sounds like the lax players were just using rehearsals for their own entertainment rather than actually practicing to be a part of the band. Our director prefers to have notice if we are planning to miss a rehearsal - just to hold us to some accountability - either sign ourselves out on a master calendar ahead of time or email him a note with a sudden absence.

I would hope that the director has second thoughts about inviting those players back next season.
