thanks for info on shuttlepipes, yes, compared to highland pipes they're really indoor friendly (check out youtube two kids playing highland pipes in a school corridor, i had to turn volume button down 50%!)

method books, since you're musically advanced already, the Gekeler Oboe Method 1 should give you some meaty musical moments up to 4 flats & sharps to curve your fingertips onto the holes while training & building your embouchure and air support this year

yes, can see that playing the chanter with lower part of straight fingers will give you a challenge there, although since you play timpani you already know how to curve gently but firmly around the sticks without gripping them like heck, oboe's handled likewise

Gekeler Oboe Method book 2 is chock-full of long etudes and tougher technique exercises, readable by musically advanced person, but likely unplayable by 1st year oboe, although ...

... 20 minutes first time you say? wow! iron-maiden embouchure already -- do let us know if lips are too sore to play day after, heh-heh-heh

the Essential Elements band method (there are 3 progressive books) has a lot of "short" pieces, yes, to get kids up and playing something right away, but also just the right length for the early months of embouchure endurance, Standard of Excellence and the other band method books ohsusan mentioned ditto

-- i find it much more satisfying to have a wide variety of short tunes to play, rather than just a few etudes over and over again

... and it's discouraging to find oneself physically unable to finish a longer piece tackled too soon

Rubank's good, higher musical expectations obvious right away in book 1
so it makes a good step up from the comprehensive band methods

Barret's more advanced, basic technique has to be pretty strong already, Gekeler 2's got many samples in it, but as soon as you luck into getting a used copy to fit your budget, grab it and work into it later

Once you know your notes on oboe i expect you could play a lot of your favorite tunes without printed music

If you luck into a deal of used music books, oboe can read off anything directly in treble clef concert C, so some primary arrangements of violin music, and flute music in middle C to high C range would give you more options when combing the bargin bins, soprano & tenor songs also good range (although you'll be playing the tenor octave higher). However trumpet, clarinet and alto sax music is usually already transposed into Bb and Eb respectively so it won't be the right key to play along with them

when you get tatty old music, repair it at once to give you more efficient page turning, and make sure all the pages that belong together are attached to each other for music stand working conditions
invisible scotch tape is excellent for repairing tears where you have to see the music through it, although it's always best to mend on the back of the paper rather than on the front over the print
beige masking tape works really well for spines and reinforcing on the back full length of edges and at corners of older paper where you handle the sheets most frequently
use sharp scissors, not the tape dispenser cutter, for a neater finish
