Not sure what you're referring to here. If you mean "learning left-hand F when you get an oboe that has it", it's not a big deal. I started on a Selmer 1492 (rental instrument) and shifted over to my Fox 333 after six months, and had no problems whatsoever in learning to use the left-hand F, plus the low Bb. AFAIK that's the only substantial fingering differences you have to "re-learn", other than figuring out where the trill keys are on the upscale model that has them. So don't let that hold you back.
My Fox 333 is billed as an "intermediate" model, which puts it one step lower than the 330. I'm very happy with it, and the reason I went with it was because I don't need all the "bells and whistles" in terms of trill keys and suchlike that the 330 offers. Also, the 333 goes for considerably cheaper than the 330, and used ones are available frequently, they being considered a "step-up" model, from which the student is expected to "step up" to a pro model. So there are a goodly number of them around.
Somebody at the IDRS did a study where they had volunteers sit behind a screen and listen to wood vs. plastic oboes, and they couldn't tell the difference. So don't worry about a difference in sound, because there really isn't any.
The humidity, and cracking, problem is a good point to consider. Ask Ohsuzan how she managed to crack her brand-new oboe by letting it get too cold. Plastic oboes don't do that.
Looking at my Rand McNally, I am reminded that "far southwest Virginia" is actually quite close, as American distances go, to the cultural hotbeds of North Carolina (even though as a Virginian it might kill you to admit it ![[grin]](http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/smileys/smilie5.gif) ). Why not expand your search for an oboe, and oboe-related information, to places like these NC colleges and universities, most, if not all, of whom will have Music Departments?
