Renting an oboe is an excellent way to get started. But only figure on doing it for about six months, because after that, you will be putting enough equity into the rental instrument that you might as well be making payments on a "real" oboe. But six months is generally long enough to find out whether the oboe is for you or not.
You'll need a reed for it. Please look askance on whatever reed the oboe rental place issues you--tuck it away carefully in a box somewhere, and then ignore it. Allow me to recommend Fox Renard reeds, their low-end reeds, in (probably) a medium-soft, suitable for a beginner's embouchure.
--Yep, you read that right: it's $12.50.
For a single reed.
Oboe reeds aren't cheap, but the Foxes are worth it, they're very consistent and reliable, and actually $12.50 isn't bad for a good-quality oboe reed. The really high-end reeds out there, made by professional oboists, command prices on the high side of twenty bucks a pop.
As long as you're ordering stuff from Fox, their pull-through silk swabs are very nice, too. Silk is the only fabric that's fine enough to be pulled through an oboe's reed well, and absorbent enough to do any good once it's there (polyester "fake silk" will go through the reed well all right, but being plastic, it doesn't remove a whole lot of moisture).
Margaret Cassell at the Goodtoneguild also makes a very nice student reed (her "Rookie" reed), which is comparable in price to the Fox (lest you think I'm some sort of shill for Fox )
If you absolutely have to have a cheaper reed, Edmund Nielsen reeds are adequate.
Don't bother with plastic reeds. They sound bad.
