There are lots of instructional materials that we can recommend.

Essential Elements is a good starting place; the playalong CD is a great help in learning to play in tune with other musicians. It's frighteningly easy to develop a lovely oboe sound all by yourself, only to discover that you're 1/4 tone flat when you attempt to play with someone else. And then you have to go back to Square One and re-learn that lovely tone, but in tune.

However, be aware that the Essential Elements books are solely designed to get fifth, sixth, and seventh-graders up and running, fast, and that's about all they do. I found them woefully lacking in serious technical exercises, beyond a modicum of scales, etc., which is why I now have my stack of method and etude books, obtained from the Online Auction Site.

And the other method books that come with playalong CDs (Yamaha, Standard of Excellence, Now Go Home And Practice, among others) are similar in their aims: to get schoolchildren up to speed on the basics of their instrument as fast as possible, so they can play in the Beginner's Band, so their parents can come to the Christmas concert and hear what they're getting for their money, "Little Johnny's actually playing a song!"

So as an adult with already advanced music skillz, you'll work your way through these kinds of books in jig time and be needing something else.

Barret. Get the Schuring edition (here linked). You'll run across the facsimile reprint of the original edition during your oboe journey, but it's VERY hard to read, all that crabbed 19th century handwriting.

Rubank Method books.

The Blaine Edlefsen books, "Oboe Student", "Studies and Melodious Etudes", and "Tunes for Oboe Technic".

There are actually two "Gekeler" books: the Belwin Oboe Method by Kenneth Gekeler, and the Gekeler Method, also by Kenneth Gekeler. They do not overlap.

The Foundations for Superior Performance book, by Richard Williams and Jeff King, although it's designed for full band, has some good exercises that I like.

These are all generally available; also, if you keep your eye on the Online Auction Site, you can pick them up, used, mighty cheap.
