When I spent 3 years in Army bands years ago, I rapidly grew tired of lugging around cymbals, bass drums and glockenspiels. I decided to march with my oboe.

The objections listed in other responses caused me some concern, but I took a page out of renaissance wind band practice and made a pirouette like shawm players of the period used.

I cut a sewing spool in half, threaded the reed through the wide end and into the oboe, and was able to rest the pirouette against the outside of my lips with the reed between my lips. This gave me the same solid bracing that clarinet players have and worked very well. I made really loud, raucous reeds, too!

No lyre? Memorize your part or use an underarm lyre like the piccolos do...
