Just thought I'd add to the opinions - I agree Cooper, the 2nd oboe really should wait to tune and if they play it should be soft and just a check. If the first plays and another oboe sound comes in, it can be confusing as to WHICH A is the right one (even if the 2nd player thinks they are better!). When I play 2nd I try to just do a little check, quietly so no one else really hears.
This is different in a professional group, where everyone is just checking; and a just-for-fun group where people really don't know where their pitch is. Often in that sort of group the brass will take a Bb and the strings an A. The winds might go either way. The tuning process can take WAY longer, whereas in prof groups the whole thing is over in 30 seconds or less. So don't try to compare apples and oranges, different things are happening during that time depending on the level of expertise.
RE the Sparticus solo - that is a GREAT solo, sorry your friend isn't using better reeds. Could you ask to play the solo once during rehearsal? Of course this would never fly in a professional group, but if you are all there for fun, and you have a good relationship she might let you if you ask like it would be a huge favor. At that point, hopefully the director/other players would notice the discrepancy and feel moved to ask her why the difference...and maybe you could recommend your reeds to her. It is a horrible situation, we've all been there! I love the idea of a Christmas present reed, but you just never know if it will work for her. Good luck!
