I've read lots of threads talking about the tautness of reed thread while wrapping, but it's all relative how "tight" something is. Short of getting a force meter, I thought I'd ask, given FF thread of a certain length tied on at one end and attached to the spool in the other hand, what is the frequency you get? How hard do you pull at initial wrap, the last wrap before crossover, at crossover, and as you wind down?
I'm asking since I still have major leaking issues and I've been experimenting with tautness of the string. I've tried very tight (nearly breaking string) to just somwhat firm before the crossover. Consistent tautness. Less tautness near the throat. Tying shorter/longer. More/less overlap, etc.... and I think I still have too many pieces that do not seal properly. In general, I notice my reeds are often somewhat splayed apart near the tip, and the leaking occurs right below the heart. I scrape the tip right after tying, and now I might even just open the tip before I put it away. I usually do not have issues with leaks at the end of the staple. It's always higher up. What's the common tie-on cause for tips that do not press together or gaps in the sides near the middle? I know some cane can be warped, but the percentage of leaky reeds leads to some other issue.
