I did it with style during a public concert last night (which was also recorded for hospital radio - I only hope the surgeons listening had a steady hand and strong constitution!) - it was during the oboe solo in the military band arrangement of 'Orpheus in the Underworld' which isn't in the same key as the orchestral version.
I can play the orchestral solo with no problem as it's a walk in the park, but the band version is all a semitone higher than the original (fine for clarinets - the cadenza is exactly the same as the orchestral one, but played in this instance on a Bb clarinet instead of an A). Shame Db oboes aren't made anymore as that'd do the trick when playing things in the key of everything flat.
Although I've done this solo several times before with little or no problem in both rehersals and previous concerts, I just lost the plot completely and to be honest, I'd rather not have to play it again in the forseeable future.
Anyone else have any tales of public humiliation caused by their own lack of concentration? It'll make me feel better to know we're all human and fall foul of human error.
Maybe I should just stick to the day job.
