Kasey --
The Loree is the "R-13" of oboes. That does not mean it is the only good oboe, just as the R-13 is not the only good clarinet.
I understand where you are coming from, and I concur with your philosophy of oboe purchase. I am also a clarinetist-turned-oboist (there are a few of us like that on this board). I can share with you that I did NOT do what you are proposing, and ended up buying three oboes within an 18-month period, for precisely the reasons you are citing. I would have been better off, from a financial standpoint, to have gotten the last one first.
However, I would not have known enough, at the outset, to choose the last one first, nor would I then have been in any mood to pay what I eventually ended up paying for my (used) Covey Classic. Oboe is an expensive hobby, but I am more than happy that I made the switch, and I am thrilled with my instrument.
At the risk of sounding like I am parrotting everything the others have said, my guess, like theirs, is that your $2,000 price limit is not going to get you the oboe you need.
You might try contacting Hannah at http://www.hannahsoboes.com/. Explain your situation to her, and see what advice she gives you.
Best wishes to you -- hope you will become a board "regular".
