Whatever oboe you're looking at, make sure it has Left-Hand F, and can play Low Bb. You can tell right away if it'll play that low Bb--there will be a key on the bell itself. Cheaper oboes dispense with that. And Left-Hand F is awfully handy to have, but, again, not all oboes have it.
But since you're looking at high-end oboes to start with, it probably won't come up. I just thought I'd mention it.
Also, oboes differ between "conservatory" system and "thumbplate" system, so know what you're getting into.
