That's an interesting comment, and i found the analogy of the bell like speakers helpful to understand things better. I thought my Yamaha sounded blah because my air support hasn't arrived in the zone yet, and for a while i was presuming incorrectly that lack of a bell rim made a diff (apparently not) ... but maybe it's just the Yamaha bell itself isn't the best design as a speaker outlet

Would other makes of bell also make a positive diff to my Yamaha? Such as a Loree, Fox, Bulgheroni or Buffet bell? I'm thinking of the higher end oboes most likely available around my area. How would I go about getting an alternative bell economically, talk to my local oboe repair guy, see if he has any useless oboe bells hanging about that could be retrofitted?

The Covey bell is too expensive relative to this instrument that's had a small crack mended already, i'd rather move up to another instrument instead using the same money, but if a cheaper alternative might improve things with the oboe i've got already, seems worth a try
