Hello Walter,

You heard correctly! Bells can absolutely improve an oboe's sound. My daughter plays on a Kreul Mirafone oboe, which incurred a significant crack (all the way from the tenon ring to the bflat tone hole) which went all the way through the wood. Her tutor took pity on her and sold us a Covey bell (at an absolute steal of $175.00). Bells can greatly improve the sound of lots of oboes particularly at the extreme ends of the instrument range. Covey made some of the best. They no longer make bells, since they concentrate on oboes, but repair shops and even some private owners sell them on consignment, and can be a wise investment. I know Dave Weber at Weber Reeds here in AZ had a few on his website www.webreeds.com or check around other websites. Bells can run $400.00-$500.00, but sometimes if it buys you more time on an instrument you like, or it gets you through until you can afford a new horn, it's worth the money. The only improvement we had to make to her horn was to have the tenon joint cork replaced, which was less than $40.00. And keep your old bell in case you decide to sell/trade in your old horn, and sell the bell separately. You can recover your investment better that way sometimes.
